1. BOMB GAME
a. Choose at least 6 target language flash cards (TLFC).
b. Choose the same number of black (spades and clubs) cards and 1 red card (diamond or heart) which will serve as the bomb.
Variation 1.
Place one card on each TLFC.
The student names a TLFC and turns over the playing card. If it is a black card, the student does the same with other cards until the student turns over the red card. The student gets points by the number of black cards he/she turned over. If the student turns over the red card last, he/she gets 2 points bonus.
Variation 2. For big classes (6 or more)
Divide the class into 2 groups.
The same rule as above, only that each student can only turn over one card at a time.
2. TWENTY ONE (black jack)
a. You'll need 13 cards of the same color, say 13 diamond cards and 13 TLFC
b. Put all TLFC cards face up and put the playing cards on each of them face down.
c. Divide the group into 2. The students chose a TLFC and gets the playing card on it.
d. The group who gets a total of, or close to, 21 wins the game. Ace = 1 or 11 points. Jack, Queen and King are 10 points each. The group who gets a total of more than 21 points gets zero points.
3. BE ALERT (for active kids)
a. Choose a target language. For example, "What color do you like?"
b. The students sit in a cricle
c. Put a bean bag in the middle and shuffle the cards.
d. Tell the kids to put their hands on their head.
e. The students ask together the target language.
f. Show the cards one at a time. When they see a King they grab the bean bag. The fastest kid to get the bag gets one point and answers the question.
